Description

This orchard is a real-life example of the Ultimate American Dream curated by a Husband and Wife team accompanied by their four devoted children carrying the torch for the future of the coffee industry here on the Big Island. Cloud Rest (Moa'ula) is an ideal climate to farm the Aloha ?Aina, which literally means "love of the land". Moa'ula Farms Subdivision has private paved roads, a Lot Owners Association and Cooperative water supply. Miranda Farms is located just shy of 3 miles NW of Pahala Town. According to Marge & Dennis Elwell's book, History of Pahala, pg. 1: "Geologist tell us that the main content of the soil is ash deposited as a result of airfall deposits from volcanic explosions. The ash is called "Pahala Ash" and was mostly deposited between 13,000 and 30,000 years ago. The ash is widespread over about 450 square miles and probably originated from explosions of Kilauea and possibly Mauna Loa volcanoes. It is deepest near Pahala, with layers up to 55 feet thick, mainly a yellowish color, so is named for this area". From farming in El Salvador through the Central American Coffee belt and despite their love for their homeland, they faced challenges due to the Salvadoran civil war. Seeking solace in California, they started a family, but it wasn't the dreamland Jose had hoped for. In 1993, they took a leap of faith and moved to the underdeveloped yet promising Big Island of Hawaii, which Jose saw as a place to raise their family, referring to it as "the land of flowing milk and honey". Over the years, they toiled from one farm to another, overcoming obstacles with unwavering faith in God and each other. In 2006, an opportunity arose in coffee country, Ka'u, leading to the establishment of Miranda Farms. Three varieties of coffee trees are in production on this 13.44 acres; Typica, Red Catuai & Yellow Catuura. It is a humbling experience being a farmer!Come South and take a L oo K!A Big Island Mahalo! ()
